It's the 23rd century and Earth faces a threat from the Shadow, robots lead by a five-eyed cyborg named Umbra. He is kept in check only by a team of specially created robots called the Mighty Orbots. The team of six Orbots have secret identities as ordinary Galactic Patrol robots until their services are needed. Their commander and creator is Rob Simmons, who transforms from nerdy professor to his alter-ego, the handsome Orbots Commander, when trouble arises. Rob is in love with Dia, a Galactic Patrol pilot who, in turn, has a crush on the Orbots Commander, yet won't give Rob the time of day. When the threat grows too great for the Orbots to handle individually, they combine into one large robot with the call "Orbots unite!" with Rob directing from the Beam Car in the center.

The Orbots team is composed of six robots. Ohno is Rob's cute little lab assistant named for her propensity to exclaim "Oh no!" She is also the co-pilot of the Beam Car. Bo has the power to control the elements and forms the left arm when the team combines. She is more mischeivous than her sister, Boo. Boo has field-control and illusory abilities and forms the right arm of the team. She is shyer and more passive than her outgoing sister. Bort forms the right leg and is shapeshifter of the group, often transforming into tools and useful objects. He often is indecisive and lacks confidence in himself. Crunch is the Mighty Orbots' left leg. His main ability/disability is his appetite. He can and does eat everything (especially metal) and converts it into energy. It can get him into trouble when he interferes with Rob's experiments or someone else's property. Tor is the strongest of the group and forms the torso. He often shows off to impress Bo and Boo.

The series was pulled after its first season due to copyright disputes with Tonka, the makers of the Gobots toys.
