With Halloween on the way, I'm going to try to make myself a partial this year. I had tons of fun last year with a full body wolf suit but the heat and humidity made me miserable beyond personal endurance. It found a new home in Switzerland.

This year I'm not sure what I'm going to do, yet, but I'm leaning toward saber tooth tiger and looking out of the mouth to get more air. Since my fur suiting is basically just on Halloween, it's got to be a partial so I don't roast.

My question is this: has anyone done a head and worn glasses under it? Between eye strain on the job and raging allergies, I can usually cope with contacts once a year, but I'd much rather just wear my glasses under the head for my comfort. I know it can be done, but I haven't a clue where to start leaving room or building that one area of the head. I have the basics down okay from SPark and some other tutorials on making the mesh head, foaming, furring, etc. from the last costume. I'd just like to incorporate my specs.

Any general tips?

Thanks!

I've done several heads for glasses under. I find that they're a pain the butt when you're looking out the eyes, since the distance between your eyes and the head's eyes increases, and so your effective visual area is much smaller. But it may be better looking out the mouth.

I use a fairly heavy gauge wire (coat hanger wire works well too) to help the frame stay clear of my glasses, so they don't get shoved into my face.

I took an old pair, clipped them, and put them on the outside. The eyes don't look right, I need to put some in, but I don't have to worry about fogging or anything.

Thanks, guys, I'll let you know how it goes. Glasses can be such a pain, but I can't see my own feet without them, so going without isn't an option.

Unless I want to track down another fur to play seeing eye dog. Razz

I make heads to accomidate my glasses. Ther are two problems you will notice: you eyes are farther away from the eye holes, so vision can be further reduced, and your glasses will fog up if it gets too hot in there.

I have no option since I can't wear contacts, so you learn to make-do and hope you have a good handler available to keep an eye on you.

To accomidate my glasses, I rise the shaped mask away from my face by placing foam at the forehead and cheeks of my mask. This provides enough space for the glasses to sit on my face without the mask pressing on them, while giving me the support needed to keep the mask firmly on my face.

I do recommend you try your mask on several times while constructing it to ensure the mask never presses on your glasses anywhere, the mask weight will really start to hurt the bridge of your nose and your ears. Your glasses should float freely within your mask.

I have no actual experience, but perhaps it may be possible to build the glasses directly into the head. If you're willing to have another set made, you could slot the lens into the eyeholes. Of course, from an optical standpoint, distance away from lens changes image, so unless your eyes were very close to the holes, the lens would have to be different from those of your conventional glasses. Still, if you could find an optometrist who's willing to take a crack at calculating the actual focal distance, it is a possibility.

Someone had recommended to me, to take an old pair of glasses, remove the lenses and insert them into the head where you see through.
Seems alright in theory, however there are many problems with this method.
1) if you're like me, my eyes are so bad, the lenses are at least $150-200 for the pair (not including frames), so I tend to hold off until I absolutely NEED new glasses before I replace them. So my old pairs of glasses are really no longer good to see out of.
2) Your lenses are carved to line up with your pupils for best vision. IF you remove them and install them in a head, they probably won't line up correctly.

Either way, you'll have a bad eyestrain headache once you take your head off at the end of the day.

An interesting experiment would be to try adjustable focus lenses. The technology is very young, but when they become commonly available and cheap enough, perhaps they could be used as a general addition to fursuit heads for people who wear glasses.

I wear glasses with mine. most balaclava based heads are roomy enough for them.

Weeeellll I wimped out. I've got 4 oil paintings and a centaur doll on commission which are due before Christmas. I've got a barded horse, knight, and Dark Ages lady doll along with various other sculptures and Christmas presents I've also got to get in the mail by mid December.

Halloween is nearly on top of me, and I've got my best friend flying in from out of state to hit one of the top rated Haunted House attractions this year, along with a wax museum (which has a very nice werewolf in it which I'll get a picture of if I can for Off Topic.)

Where has the time gone?

I wimped out and bought an over the head werewolf latex mask and will only be doing some cheesed out hand and hind paws this year.

However, Hancock fabrics had it's fur half price last year right after Christmas, so I'm going to hit them and try to gather the supplies up for my next fursuit.

I may even do the partial and a full for indoor - non death/roasting level out doors since I've got all year.

I've got some ideas on how to look out of the mouth and with your help how to make it so my glasses will fit in. Someone on here last year made a head based on a baseball cap and I won't be rushed to try and figure this all out last minute.

Don't feel you have to rush. IF you want your project to turn out well, you should take your time in planning these things. There's always next halloween ^_^

I completely agree! Fursuits (even partials you do yourself) aren't cheap and I want it to look good and be something I can use over and over again. Smile With a whole year at my disposal, I can take the time to really do it right.

I just finished making a partial fursuit for my mate and made the head so she could wear her glasses under it. We had also though about using an old pair of glasses that she could wear on the outside of her head but it messed up the focal length too much and wouldn't have worked. When I built the head I put a 12v fan running off of a 9v battery in the muzzle for exhaust. We had hoped that would be enough to keep her glasses from fogging up but found that they would still fog up even when we used some of that anti-fog stuff you can get for glasses. What I ended up doing was getting a couple of 25mm by 10mm 5v fans that I put in on either side of the head to blow air into the head. I wired them up in series to run off of a second 9v battery. If you look at the picture linked to below they fans are located on either side of the head just behind where the plastic for the eyes end. We were suiting at the zoo for 3-4 hours and the fans kept her glasses from fogging up the entire time. She said that if her glasses did get some fog on them the fans would clear it off quickly.

I have noticed my glasses fog once I first put the head on. But if I wait awhile, my glasses warm up and the fogging goes away. However if I keep removing the head to fix my fogged up glasses, they keep fogging up once the head is back on.
I suggest glasses wearers try waiting for a few moments when fogging occurs to see if it clears. Also keep in mind controlling your breathing helps. If you are doing a lot of activity, you will breathe heavier and cause increased fogging. If you can control your breath and slow your breathing, fogging will be significantly less.
