Greetings fellow He-Fans and She-Ravers,

One of the great things about Masters of the Universe Classics is how it has allowed us to finally get figures of characters that were always meant to be, and longed for by the fans, yet never came about until now. Way back near the start of the line we saw that with the long awaited figure of He-Ro from the prototyped but never released Powers of Grayskull spin off line. Since then fans have been hoping to also get his likewise prototyped mentor character Eldor, and at last he has arrived.

Eldor, like He-Ro, had a prototype figure made and advertised, but was canceled and left to hard core fan obscurity for many years. He did make a brief cameo appearance in the 200X comic as a member of the Council of Wisdom, but he was not actually named on page for legal reasons even though it was obvious to the fan readers who he was intended to be.

Eldor comes in the standard MOTUC blister card pack, complete with the Powers of Grayskull logo sticker on the front. It can be argued a bit odd that Eldor comes as a regular monthly figure when He-Ro was an SDCC exclusive, but since there was no subscription back then and He-Ro was made available on the site to everyone it doesn't really matter in the end. The back of the box shows off other figures in the line and presents a bio for Eldor.

And just like He-Ro's it changes a lot of what little we knew about him in order to fit into the Classics continuity. To be fair it does keep to the whole mentor of Gray detail, even if they had to invent a REALLY LAME way to fit He-Ro's identity as Gray into the story. (no Scott this does not make the fans of the original He-Ro story happy -quite the opposite) It would have been better to spend the bio talking about the Book of Living Spells more and what it can actually do.

Taking a look at the actual figure it is amazing how much extra detail was put into updating the vintage prototype which some argued had a simplistic design. His face sculpt captures an aged wise man look not only in his bushy white beard, but also in wrinkles on his forehead and around his eyes. Even his outfit shows signs of age with slight tattered and frayed designs around the end of his tunic and sleeves. He features new boot sculpts which also have a slight worn look to them complete with detailed ropes wrapped around them.

His belt is bright golden and has extra details such as a pouch and small tools hanging down. These are non-removable but are fully painted and add too the overall look.

Eldor features a removable hood. It's sculpted with a bit of a lip that helps hold it in place on his shoulders around the collar area. His shirt and outer tunic are all one removable armor piece over the standard buck, pretty much in sync with what we've come to expect in the line. The neat thing about it is how the sculpted stitching up the back works in such away that when on it flows evenly with the collar, but when off the collar looks like the hood is down. Now it must be noted that while the hood is on that pretty much eliminates head articulation, mainly because you simply cannot get a hold of the head to move it. It can get a bit of movement, but you're pretty much stuck in the one pose. Also as you probably noticed that the hood sits a bit too high and should be closer to his actual scalp.

I should point out that the scull cap on the head is actually accurate the the vintage prototype. That figure's hood would not have been removable, but it has been revealed that the head was going to have this detail on it.

His secondary accessory is another Filmation artifact known as the Staff of the Ancients. The look is perfectly captured from the cartoon and brought out with a grained wooden appearance and a clear plastic spell stone imbedded in the crook. The great thing about this inclusion is not only do we get another piece from the cartoon, but it works perfectly with the character it is included with. As a wizard Eldor is almost expected to have a staff, and since he's a wizard from Eternia's ancient past it actually works to have him wielding the Staff of the Ancients.

Eldor's main accessory though is his Book of Living Spells. Like Eldor himself, it features a great aged sculpt giving the appearance of an old worn out leather bound tome. Keeping with the story element of the book carrying secrets of past and future, one side features the emblem from He-Ro's armor while the other side has He-Man's cross emblem. The book features hinges and a clasp so it can open, and while the pages inside are blank, they do feature an aged look with torn pages. Now the vintage book was going to have hologram stickers that were placed inside so some fans may feel disappointed in that not being present. Also worth noting is that, because of the way his hands are sculpted, Eldor can't really hold the book. You can get it in poses resting on his arms and even kind of get it on his fingertips, but he probably should have been made with the jointed wrists like Bow so it could rest in his actual hands.

Eldor is a figure that I and many other fans have been longing to get for years. Once He-Ro showed up he became a must have and the final product is amazingly more detailed than I could have ever expected. My only real complaint is with the hood sitting a bit too high, but otherwise this is one of the best done figures this year. As of this posting Eldor is still available on Mattycollector.com so head on over to pick him up. Until next time, Good Journey.
