Another Robot movie question

Hi, trying to track down a movie i saw when i was young (80's) that I cant find any trace of. I'm in the UK and didn't have anything other the 4 terrestrial channels back then. It was western style animation, not anime and featured a big robot. It was mostly dark, brooding and pretty scary to young me at least.
The only scene i remember clearly is sweeping over fields to the robot that opened its eyes which were bright red against the dark background and i think it was chasing after a little boy.
Not much to go on but hopefully someone has an eidetic memory - grateful for any suggestions! I've checked youtube and wikipedia and google but recent iron man and iron giant films dominate the search results.
