Help, searched all over web & cant remember this cartoon

I watched this cartoon growing up in the 90's but i suspect it could be an 80's cartoon. Memories are vague but here goes.
-I get a French kind of vibe from it
-it wasn’t “cartoony” it has a more “mature” style like xmen or batman the animated series
-I think characters were drawn kind of tall and thin
-was about a guy, he could have been a high class thief or something. The episode I remember is of him breaking into a museum. And he was a master of disguise. He had a briefcase with makeup, disguises etc. I remember guards chasing him but he might have pulled into a dark corner and come out looking different. I say he was a thief but not sure he was a bad guy, he could have been a detective or something…

thanks for the reply! thats not it though. it is very similar tho. the guy i'm thinking about didn't have a costume. i can't remember if it's a episode or opening but he's a building ledge.

it is similar to diabolik, but not as bright, i don't recall any sunny beach scenes or girls in bikinis. more of night time and buildings, on a train in the night, dark alleys....

WOW!! so great. Thanks you so much. i watched this growing up. it was good. did you ever watch it?

i guess it wasn't very popular. when i looked through list of cartoons from the 90s on other sites, even wikipedia, i didn't see it mentioned on any list.

I watched it. It was awesome. One of my favorites
My favorite ep is the first one where he pretends to be Hemlock Shomes.
The books are good too
