please help 1980's space cartoon

I remember the characters were very beautiful, the style was kind of in the battle of the planets. The episode I remember stuck in my mind because the two main characters one male and one female, were in love with each other but had to combine to create another being which could fight the evil force/person. It was set in space. I remember the sense of loss and fighting for the greater good! I am probably imaging this but if anyone else out there knows what I am talking about I would really appreciate your help!!
