Hello,
in the early 90es (91-92) I had one cartoon on a cassette that I really liked but I have lost this cassette and I am trying to find this cartoon on the web but I don't know the name of that cartoon.I think it was made in the 80es.
The beginning and the end of this cartoon is actually a movie with real people.In the beginning we can see two or three boys and a girl talking about a hurt bird they have in a paper box.They were in front of a school.Then they went home,and at night they drew some unusual stars on the computer.When they did that they suddenly were "teleported" in a cartoon world.
The theme of this cartoon world was the battle between David and Goliath.
After they helped David defeat Goliath they went back home and became real people again.I'm not sure but I think that animated characters in this cartoon world were animals.
So if you know the name of this cartoon please post.

I found an animated ABC Weekend Special that fits your description from 89'
Live-action children (Mary-Ann, Peter, & Sauli ) who are taken on a trip through time with cute, animal friends (a lion, maybe a racoon), who were formally just stuffed toys.
