This cartoon was possibly a series, movie, or both.

The animation evokes the animated hobbit style in its fantasy/sci-fi elements, and rainbow brite in its more child-friendly qualities. For instance, seems that all the characters had big round heads with curly hair and that they all wore different colors to match their magical/super/elemental powers/personalities. For some reason, I keep thinking they had to go to a big mountain at some point to eliminate the potential of a serious catastrophe taking place and destroying their planet (Earth?). In general, I relate notions of Earth-friendly ideals with the show, though I can't say much about the plot line besides this idea that they believed they had to get to the top/bottom of that mountain [to defeat the dragon/evil wizard/volcano/troll/gnome/beast?].

Ummm,..wide range of inspiration/memories there...
Care Bears (Nelvana), The Hobbit (Rankin/Bass),
Smurfs (Hanna/Barbera), He-Man(Filmation), Rainbow Brite (Sunbow)...

Wild guess

Magical characters, each specialized
on a mission
The Magic of Herself the Elf

any more info?
maybe a pic would help.

You actually guessed right. I found the answer here about an hour ago after remembering how much I used to love the book, which has been on the shelf all these years, and then watched the short animated special, which is apparently all I ever saw.

Turns out, they go to an ominous swamp castle--not a mountain--owned by an evil king wizard named Thorn and his daughter Creeping Ivy, to save nature from disaster.

Cool of you to answer me so quickly--and correctly--though. Keep cool, dudes.
