Did the character start in another medium (movies, books, comic strips or books)?

Recap:
Starts with J
Human
Female
Cartoon is from the 80s
Not the star but part of an ensemble or duo.
Has no superpowers of her own but can use a power when in conjunction with another/others
Although there appears to be a team or duo, if this team/duo has a name (a.k.a. The Herculoids or The Wonder Twins), the show is not named for the team or duo.
Not Hanna-Barbera
The powers are not magical
The animation is Western (not anime)
This character was never live action. There was a live action series that was vaguely related to this series but they never used any of the charecters or stories from the cartoon.
Was set in the, then, present.
Not Disney, DiC, Rankin Bass, Sunbow, Warner Bros. or Filmation.
Has a special tool that can be a weapon
Show was set on Earth

Have I missed or misrepresented anything?

Nice. I think I would say regarding the power the character uses- it's in conjunction both with her special tool and the people involved in using it.

Is Jamie Jaren from Lazer Tag Academy?

If not was there a toy line?

Yes, it is from Ruby Spears.

And yes, it is Jamie Jaren from "Lazer Tag Academy"- a short-lived scifi cartoon from the mid-80s that I loved watching as a kid.

Alas, it has not gotten a DVD release yet though a few episodes did make it to VHS. And for the record, I don't think it ever got a toyline. It seems to have had little merchandise made for it.
By the way, for anyone wondering, the live action series I referred to is called "Photon".

Good job, overload. Very Happy Cool

Actually, Photon and Lazer Tag Academy were not related except being based on the game laser tag. Lazer Tag was released by Worlds of Wonder (the makers of Teddy Ruxpin). Photon was the name of several laser tag centers, although there was, later, a home version. Photon had some novels written by Peter David (as David Peters) and another novel written by Michael P. Kube-McDowell (as Michael Hudson).

Well, that's why I said it was only vaguely related. Sorry if that was misleading for anyone.

Awesome. Great pick.

Well the show was based on a "Toy" if you will. The Lazer Tag game.

So while no action figures were made to consider it a toy line there was a toy for it. Razz

Anyway, I have seen this show a few times. Draxon Drear's master plan is one of the silliest if you consider wiping out Jamie would mean wiping out himself.

But hey it was an 80's cartoon designed to promote an infrared gun and sensor game set.

Now, is there any other cartoon based on a electronic game I could use....

Electronic game? Do video games count? There are several cartoons based on those.

That's a good point about the show being based on Lazer Tag- the game itself. I didn't really think about it in those terms, but yeah- I guess I should have said it's based on a toy. But I don't know if I'd say the show had a toyline, since Lazer Tag came around before the "Lazer Tag Academy" cartoon.
That's a funny point about Draxon Drear's plot- I don't know if that really occured to me much as a kid- if so, I just dismissed it- it's a fun cartoon nonetheless.
And yes, there are other cartoons based on electronic games out there.... Very Happy Cool
