The greatest of all remakes! this is Carpenter's masterpiece after Halloween and still the king of Sci-fi horror besides Alien and Aliens. John Carpenter remade a hokey 50's Sci-fi horror movie that he loved as a kid called The Thing from Another World and made it better.

The original is based on a novella called "Who goes there" but in 1951 it was a good but cheesy adaptation that had good potential but didn't have the time or technology to do the idea justice back then. So Carpenter used both sources for his remake with great results that have amazing effects by Rob Bottin, gore galore, action and suspense making it a classic.

I suppose you're aware of the prequel movie that's supposed to be coming to theaters later this year- http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0905372/
October 14, 2011- don't know if this movie was really needed but maybe it will be good.
From all I've heard of the 1982 movie though- that one is classic. I haven't seen that one (because I don't care for horror movies in general)
- but John Carpenter's 1984 movie "Starman" is great! I love that movie. Very Happy

I was still unborn when the original came out but I have watched a lot of other movies from this era and love them. This might be next on my list to pickup. I'm getting a new HDTV as well so I'm pumped to watch some classics. How are the prices on TVs at hh gregg?
