I keep having these visions of an episode (I think?) of a cartoon, with a giant animated tree, which I think the heroes go inside of it. Inside it captures them, and makes evil clones in pods to hunt down the rest.

I can semi-see this in my mind, animation at 80's He-Man level (slight chance it's an episode of that), with squirmy tentacles and such.

All else I can remember are maybe glowy red eyes on the evil clones (they definitely looked much more sinister).

Any ideas out there? Driving me bonkers!

Sounds like the series that immediately
precedes The Master's of the Universe/He-Man
Filmation's,

Blackstar (83)
Episode:Tree of Evil

Astronaut John Blackstar was pulled through a black hole into another universe and crash landed on the planet Sagar. He was found by a friendly group of native dwarf-like people (The Trobbits), and their friends Klone ( a shape-shifter), and Mara the sorcerous. John Blackstar joined their struggle to remain free from the grip of the tyrant, Overlord.
Blackstar's main advantage in the fight against Overlord was the StarSword. The The Star Sword was half the blade of an unstoppable sword that would allow it's owner to become invincible.
Overlord had the Power Sword, the other half of the sword, and he was determined to get Blackstar's half.
Warlock was Blackstar's flying dragon steed.

Wow - yes, that's it, that's it exactly. No wonder I couldn't remember it - I must not have seen more than that single episode.

Thank you Straydog!
