Stone age to space age cartoon TV series

I used to watch this cartoon in Denmark, but have a feeling it would have been French or Belgian (just a guess, it was dubbed over in Danish).
The series was on TV and I think ran for a long period (probably a year or two).
It started out as a population of people living in the stone age, then as the series went on they eventually reached into the space age.
The characters were the same ones through the entire series.
There was one old guy with a long beard and a sort of long stick nose.
The characters were not accurate human representations in terms of their looks, but then again this was a cartoon.
I though it would have been called 'Once upon a Time' but have struck out with this title.
Any help appreciated, I'm trying to see if I can find it for the little one.
