I remember seeing this cartoon probably in very early 90's so suspect it may have been made in the 80's.

Possibly feature-length.

The start of the film begins on a spaceship, which crashes. Red alert lights are pulsing on the bridge making it atmospheric and one of the crew or a stowaway escapes from it.

There may be a firefight at this stage.

He finds himself in an underground tunnel with alien bipedal creatures. There are strange plants also encountered.

I can't recall the rest of the story, but this vague memory of the start has stayed with me plus the feeling that I really enjoyed it!

Any ideas anyone?

Thanks for your help in advance!

Wild guess,..

Could it have been

Revenge of the Humanoids

a.k.a. La revanche des humanoides

starring the characters that appear
in the series
Once Upon a Time...Space
Etait Une Fois... L'Espace

From the trailer of it I've seen and other images, I can see how that is a good suggestion but I don't think this is it.

I think the people in the animation I'm thinking of were depicted more realistically than in Revenge of the Humanoids.

Any other thoughts?

(thanks for the suggestion so quickly!)

Was it anime or western animation?

At the age I saw it, I would have been unaware of the style unfortunately.

I remember thinking this was something special, unlike the other animations I'd seen up to that point which is the same feeling I got when there was a run of anime stuff on UK tv while I was in high school and realising this was for me!

So its entirely possible it was anime. I'm sorry I can't be specific either way.
