Trying to recall an HBO short around 1984.

I remember seeing this often when the movie "The Thing" was first on HBO, so that puts it around 1984.

It was a short cartoon about a family being killed off by accident by people trying to rescue them.

I only remember a few scenes.

A young kid was mistakenly identified as having apendicitis and died in a makeshift operating table. The operation was at night, viewed from outside the house through a drawn curtain so you only saw shadows.

A bunch of rescuers tried to cross a frozen lake, some falling into the ice.

Any ideas?
